Yes you read the headline right! Capcom has posted updated sales figures for a number of its franchises, confirming that Resident Evil 5 has overtaken Street Fighter II to become its most successful game.
RE5 has shifted a total of 6.5 million copies as of September 30, 2013. That means the 2009 sequel has ssurpassed the iconic brawler SFII’s sales record, with the 1992 game selling 6.3 million units.

The figure does not include subsequent Street Fighter II editions, however: 1993′s Street Fighter II Turbo claims 4.3 million sales in the publisher’s chart, for instance.
“With more than 60 titles that have sold more than one million units, Capcom stands alone in the video game industry,” said the publisher in a statement.
The publisher updated its best-selling games list as part of its Q2 2013 financials.
Elsewhere in its report, Capcom said it was buoyed by the release of Monster Hunter 4 in Japan, which has now sold over 2.8 million copies and was described as an “immediate success” by Capcom.
Monster Hunter 4 is yet to be confirmed for a release outside of Japan.
Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is said to have “enjoyed steady sales” whereas the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC versions of Resident Evil: Revelations and 3DS downloadable Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies both “basically achieved project sales.”
Lost Planet 3 sales, however, were below Capcom’s expectations, “due in part to intensifying competition in the European and US markets.”
According to its latest financial report, Capcom’s sales jumped 16.9% to ¥53 billion, with the company also enjoying a net income boost of 20% to ¥4.95 billion.
