Top 10 Videogame Sound Effects Your Phone Needs (w/ download links)

Imagine a videogame without sound effects.

Now wash your dirty dirty brain.

It’s hard to comprehend how much of a leap we’ve taken in videogames in terms of sound effects, but it really is a vital part of the medium that we really couldn’t do without. Hearing them sprout nostalgic feelings and memories; songs are wonderful and all, but there’s something insanely innocent about a 1 to 2 second sound file that makes you go all tingly inside.

I’ve always found myself trying to customise my phone’s text alerts and ringtones and etc. and found the whole thing to be a bit of a struggle. So here we go. I’ve done the hard work for you and compiled what I feel are some of the best videogame sound effects your phone needs.

I’ve tried not to include anything you may have heard before, or that someone you know might already have just to keep everything original. Also, I’ve included a folder for both iOS and Android (so no complaining, chumps).

Let’s take a look at what we have inside:

1. Goldeneye 007 - Damage Sound & Reload

Let’s face it; this game’s sound was flawless. If you’re super mega popular and want your phone to sound like you’re in a battlefield you can now use the lovely sound that James Bond HIMSELF makes when he gets hurt. BOSS.

I’ve also added the Reload sound just for kicks; there’s millions of shooting game reload sounds out there but you’ll never forget this one. Ever.

2. Donkey Kong Country 64 - Various

This game also has brillllllllliant sound - it’s amazing. I’ve included two sweet menu sounds and even the glorious “MMMMMMM BANANA” one just because it’s hilarious.

3. Mortal Kombat 2 - Jax’s “GOTCHA!” & Liu Kang’s Bicycle Kick

You’re social life is out of control! It’s got you in it’s cold iron grip! Jax’s iconic quip that nobody should be without.

Also I’ve included Liu Kang’s jibba jabba just for pure comedy gold moments.

4. Street Fighter 2 Arcade - Opening/Credit

Gorgeous, soft Super Nintendo sound effect. Something about it’s soundchip just makes you want to make love to the damn thing.

5. Megaman 3 - Life Sound

I’m pretty sure it’s the life sound - you hear it in every title so it’s gotta be important. Nice and quirky - will turn heads more pleasantly than the overused mario coin sound effect.

6. Super Mario RPG - “Thankyou!”

Sounds like utter crap on your computer/lappie, but on your phone sounds gorgeous. If you’ve played SMRPG you’ll want this one for sure.

7. Streets of Rage - Elevator Cooldown

Opted out of offering a “BURN UPPAH” or 1up sound - instead something a bit more die-hard. If you were manly enough to make it to round 7 (or so) of Streets of Rage 1, then you know how important this sound was to the game. This was the sound that grabbed tension and spat in it’s face.

8. Zelda: A Link to the Past - You got a key!

No “DUH NUH NUH NUHHHH”‘s here; this one is sweet, simple and charming. You’ll remember it once you hear it. You’ll never forget it afterwards.

9. Tekken 3 - Chicken!

How could I resist? It’s just so symbolic of the nature of game’s attitudes at the time and it will probably bring back fond memories of you and your mates repeating it endlessly in class. CHICKENNN

10. Final Fantasy IX - Moogle’s “Kupo!”

Was my personal text alert for most of my University life and now it can be yours! It doesn’t ever become annoying in game, so it’s perfect for your phone.
