In an interview with The Wall Street Journal Telltale Games reveals that over 8.5 million episodes of The Walking Dead have been sold to date. Remember The Walking Dead is an episodic game meaning that the game itself didn’t sell 8.5 million but rather all the episodes across all formats have sold that much. It’s an impressive figure especially when you consider The Walking Dead is basically one of those old school point and click adventure games.

WSJ: Let’s talk numbers. How are sales?

DC: To date, it’s sold 8.5 million episodes and it’s been in the marketplace for seven months. November and December were our biggest months. It was the culmination of the product, the game of the year awards, the retail push, and it still has a ton of head room in it. Apple has featured us a bunch of times for each of the episodes, and it’s in Apple’s Hall of Fame (for iPhone and iPad apps).

It’s also revealed that 25% of those sales are actually from the mobile version which I found a little surprising, I played The Walking Dead on my iPhone and all it did was make me think “This seems cool, I’ll buy it on the console”.

If you’ve not yet played The Walking Dead then I urge you to do so, I don’t about it being game of the year but it’s certainly something worth experiencing. Yeah it’s somewhat busted technically at times but it has one of the best stories I have ever seen and for that alone it’s worth a look.

Congratulations to TellTale Games on the success of The Walking Dead, especially after their Jurassic Park game. Well deserved guys and I think we’re all ready for The Walking Dead Season 2, bring it on.
