Square Enix have released a features trailer for a definitive version of 2011′s Deus Ex: Human Revolution with improvements across all platforms and extra features.
The trailer shows off features for the Wii U gamepad, such as inventory management, a radar screen and enhanced vision modes. According to this article on Kotaku the features will be available for Xbox via Smart glass and PS3 via the Vita. All of the gameplay in the trailer takes place during the DLC The Missing Link which has been incorporated into the main game.
Other improvements include refined graphics on the Wii U version of the game, expanded the AI changes from The Missing Link to the entire game, and, yes people-who-rightly-hated-some-of-the-boss-battles, vastly improved boss battles! There is no way to avoid killing the bosses as it would alter the story too much, but (without spoilers) the boss battles have been changed to allow different approaches.
The boss battles came under extra criticism when it was found out that they had been outsourced to a different studio, which is why they so clunky and felt out of place in the game. Emile Pedneault, in this article from Eurogamer, said “We went through all the boss battles and said, ‘lets just start from the beginning’.
This should fix, or at least decrease the annoyance of, the biggest downer in an otherwise, in my opinion, pretty great game. If would be nice if the updated boss fights and AI was available as a title update, even without the fancy touchpad features, but it seems unlikely. It’s a shame. I keep wanting to go back to Deus Ex, but the boss fights are a big, wet fart in an otherwise smooth, exciting game.
The Deus Ex directors cut was initially slated for a spring release but is now due for release later in October for PC, Wii U, PS3 and Xbox 360.
