Not a fan of the action focus of Dead Space 3? Well the original Dead Space writer claims it’s a necessary evil. Yeah I know what you’re thinking but before we are all up in arms regarding this we should take a look first.
Speaking to Now Gamer the writer for the original Dead Space - Antony Johnston - had the following to say.
“I’m personally a big fan of old-school survival horror,” said Johnston, “and that was one of the main reasons I wanted to work on Dead Space. So the greater emphasis on big action in the sequels means they’re not really for me.”
Johnston then added that Dead Space 3′s focus on action is “a necessary evil in order to broaden the fan base,” admitting that “it’s a very difficult balancing act to pull off. So far, I think Visceral has done an admirable job of maintaining that balance.”
I can completely understand where Antony is going with this and it does make sense, pure survival horror eventually has to be pushed aside if you’re looking to broaden the fan base of the series. Don’t look at me, it’s the ever loving Call of Duty crowd who decide what games end up on the charts.
It’s a shame but sadly this is how our industry works, Dead Space 3 might end up being the best selling game in the series which fine I guess. Unfortunately we the fans can’t help but feel that the series had to resort to “selling out” in order to reach that success.
Where is Masonic Gamer’s review of Dead Space 3 I hear you ask? Well to be honest with you guys, the postman is being an ass and we are currently awaiting our copy of the game as a result. We’ll have a review up as soon as he remembers what the meaning of his job description is.
